PUBLIC DISPLAY EXERCISE ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (ESIA) OF THE PROPOSED REHABILITATION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF PORT HARCOURT – MAIDUGURI NARROW GUAGE RAILWAY AND ITS ACCESSORIES, BONNY – ONNE – ELELENWO – UBIMA – OWERRI RAILWAY BRANCH LINES,  BONNY DEEP SEAPORT AND PORT HARCOURT INDUSTRIAL PARK  PROJECTS BY FEDERAL MINISTRY OF TRANSPORTATION

In accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Act CAP E12 LFN 2004, which makes it mandatory for proponents of all new major development activities to carry out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of their proposed projects, the Federal Ministry of Environment hereby announces twenty–one (21) working days public display on the draft ESIA reports submitted by Federal Ministry of Transportation. ESIA OF BONNY DEEP SEA (EISRL – DRAFT)              Port_Harcourt_Maiduguri_Railway_Draft_ESIA_Report_v3

Brief Projects Description:

The Port Harcourt – Maiduguri Narrow Gauge Railway project shall entail the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the existing 1,443km Nigerian Eastern Railway Line from Port Harcourt in Rivers State and terminates in Maiduguri, Borno State traversing sixty five (65) Local Government Areas in twelve States with the following components:

  • Construction of 216km Gashua Branch Line: Goniri – Gashua narrow gauge
  • Construction of 200km Kaduna Connecting line: Kafanchan – Rigachikun narrow gauge
  • Construction of 35km Jos Branch line: Kuru – Jos narrow gauge
  • Construction of New Rgachikun and Assa Transshipment Stations

The Bonny – Onne – Elelenwo – Ubima – Owerri Branch Line in Rivers and Imo States shall entail the construction of the following:

  • 16km Port Harcourt – New Elelenwo narrow gauge with 1 station
  • 4km Elelenwo – Bonny narrow gauge with 3 stations in the short, middle and long term, including 2 intermediate stations and 1 passing loop.
  • 02km Onne – Onne Port branch line with 1 intermediate station
  • 85km Elelenwo – Owerri Branch line with 3 intermediate stations in the short term and 1 passing loop.

The Port Harcourt Industrial park project shall entail the construction of an Industrial park comprising 12 standardized workshops with a total construction area of 100,000m2, office blocks of 250m2, living area of 11500m2 and other ancillary facilities on a land take of 114 hectares in Ubima, Ikwere Local Government Area, Rivers State.  Click To Download: Draft Report Port Harcourt Ind Park (EISRL) v2

The Bonny Deep Seaport project shall entail the construction of a deep seaport with a capacity of 100,000DMT container vessel and 50,000DWT bulk vessel on a total land take of 275.22 hectares in Bonny Island, Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State.
